Why Work as a Professional Organizer at ORG NYC

Most people who organize for a living start alone. You find your own clients, haul your own donation bags to the curb, and learn from social media that the job is supposed to look like a wall of matching bins. Nobody hands you a method, so you build one on the fly. ORG NYC runs it differently. You work in a team of two or three, every session is scoped before you arrive, and every job starts by deciding what stays before anything gets bought.

Open Roles: Lead Organizer and Assistant Organizer

We are hiring for two professional organizer jobs right now. Both roles work the same sessions side by side, and the second one is the way into the first.

Planning the order of work on a back-of-house organizing project

Lead Organizer

You run the session. You walk the space with the client, set the order of work, lead a team of two or three through it, and leave a system the household can keep up.

What you will do

  • Lead in-home sessions from the first walkthrough to the final reset, across one-room resets, whole-home projects, maintenance visits, and moves
  • Direct assistant organizers on the day, and teach the method as you work
  • Talk every keep-or-go decision through with the client, because nothing leaves a home without their okay
  • Plan materials around what the client already owns, and source new pieces only when they earn their place
  • Match outgoing items to the right charity or consignment shop, and make sure they leave with the team
  • Lead office, showroom, and back-of-house projects with a team of three
  • Write the short note each client gets on keeping the space the way you left it

What you bring

  • Paid professional organizing experience of two or more years
  • Experience running a job with the client in the room, calmly and at their pace
  • A clear way of walking a client through the zones, labels, and routines you set up, so their household can keep them going after the team leaves
  • Comfort with a physical day of boxes, step ladders, and walk-up buildings

Assistant Organizer

Organizing is already the thing you do for fun. Here it becomes a rigorous, trained skill. You work every session beside a lead organizer and learn the ORG NYC method firsthand.

What you will do

  • Sort, declutter, and reset spaces alongside a lead organizer
  • Bag, label, and log donations and consignment pieces, and help carry them out at the end of the day
  • Build the zones and labels the lead has planned, so the system holds up after the team leaves
  • Photograph, number, and list every box for storage unit and garage inventories
  • Practice each step of the method in the field until you can run it without prompting

What you bring

  • No professional organizing experience required
  • An eye for how people use a space, not only how it looks
  • Discretion, because you will see closets, paperwork, and family photos nobody else has seen
  • Comfort with a full day on your feet

If you organize in a way that fits neither role, tell us anyway. We would rather know who is out there than miss the right person.

What ORG NYC’s Six Values Mean on a Working Day

Create Calm

Calm is for the team as well as the client. Sessions are scoped before anyone arrives, and when a space needs more time, we tell the client before we start. What we need from you is steadiness, the person who keeps a client settled when a job runs long.

Lead with Kindness

Clients open closets and paperwork they have not shown anyone. We never comment on how a space got that way, never discard anything without the client’s okay, and give each other the same patience at hour six of a long session.

Celebrate Every Story

One week it is a nursery for new parents. The next, it is a showroom sample closet, a couple downsizing after thirty years, or a storage unit nobody has opened in a decade. The job asks you to shift with each one and build the plan around the people in it.

Grow with Curiosity

The best organizers here ask why before they ask where. Why does the mail pile up by the door? Why did the last system stop working? You are expected to keep learning, to question your own setup, and to bring a better idea to the next session.

Organize Boldly

Lead organizers are trusted to make the calls on the day, from rezoning a kitchen to telling a client a new closet system is not the answer yet. Decluttering comes first here, so the bold move is often buying nothing at all.

Build Community

What leaves a home goes somewhere useful. The team matches it to the right charity or consignment partner, from Goodwill to The RealReal, and takes it out at the end of the session. That takes someone who cares where a thing ends up, not only that it leaves.

What We Look For in a Professional Organizer

An ORG NYC organizer folding linens with care during a session
  • You notice where things land, not only where they belong.
  • You can wait out a hard decision without rushing the client.
  • What you see in someone’s home stays with you.
  • You would reuse a shoebox before you would sell a bin.
  • You show up on time, anywhere in three boroughs, by subway.
  • You leave a space the way you would want to find it.

What you will need:

  • authorization to work in the US,
  • the ability to lift about 40 lb and manage stairs,
  • and weekday availability between 9 AM and 4 PM.

How Assistant Organizers Are Trained at ORG NYC

Professional organizer training here follows the same six-step method behind every ORG NYC project. You learn each step in clients’ homes, beside a lead organizer, until you can run it yourself.

  1. Space planning. Watch how a household uses a space before deciding what goes where.

  2. Zone mapping. Build flexible zones around where things land, not rigid categories nobody follows.

  3. Vertical storage. Use the height a New York apartment gives you, because the floor plan is not getting bigger.

  4. Tricky layouts. The awkward corner, the too-deep closet, the room doing three jobs at once.

  5. Fewer products. Declutter first, use what the client already owns, and buy last.

  6. Sustainable materials. When something does have to be bought, it should last and be worth owning.

The path: Assistant Organizer → Lead Organizer

How fast you move up depends on what you can run on your own, not on how long you have been here.

A Message From Allison Flanders, Founder of ORG NYC

“I started ORG NYC in 2024, after years in management consulting and while raising a family in a 1,000-square-foot Manhattan apartment. I kept seeing organizing sold as more product, when what people needed was a better system and someone kind to build it with. That is still the job. I’m looking for people who care how a home works day to day, who can be trusted in someone’s most private spaces, and who want to get very good at this. If that sounds like you, I would like to hear from you.”
